Marcel L. (M.L.) Walker is a Pittsburgh, PA-based freelance artist specializing in graphic prose (a.k.a. "comic books"), illustration, and graphic design. He's an expert on social applications for the graphic-prose arts, with a mission of championing comic books as a force for social good.

 

Marcel writes and draws graphic prose, and teaches workshops and classes on comic-books and the narrative arts. His clients have included The Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank, Slippery Rock University, The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, and The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society. In addition to his freelance work, he's currently the Lead Artist and Project Coordinator for CHUTZ-POW! SUPERHEROES OF THE HOLOCAUST, an ongoing educational series published by the Holocaust Center of Pittsburgh

 

His creative writing services have included literary reviews for publication, arts-related event documentation, prose fiction, comic-book scripts, and poetry. Clients have included the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and The Pittsburgh Foundation.

In 2016, Marcel won two regional awards for his work: from The Pittsburgh Foundation and The Heinz Endowments he received an Advancing Black Art in Pittsburgh Award, and from The Greater Pittsburgh Arts Council he was given an Artists Opportunity Grant. In 2017, he was voted Best Local Cartoonist by readers of the Pittsburgh City Paper. In 2018, he became a BMe Community Genius Fellow.

 

In 2024, Marcel was inducted as an inaugural honoree of Righteous Among the Neighbors, a joint project of The LIGHT Education Initiative and the Holocaust Center of Pittsburgh, for his work supporting the Jewish community and standing against antisemitism.
