Marcel L. (M.L.) Walker is a Pittsburgh, PA-based freelance artist specializing in graphic prose (a.k.a. "comic books"), illustration, and graphic design. He's an expert on social applications for the graphic-prose arts, with a mission of championing comic books as a force for social good.
Marcel writes and draws graphic prose, and teaches workshops and classes on comic-books and the narrative arts. His clients have included The Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank, Slippery Rock University, The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, WYEP, and The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society. In addition to his freelance work, he worked as the Lead Artist and Project Coordinator for CHUTZ-POW! SUPERHEROES OF THE HOLOCAUST, an engaging educational series published by the Holocaust Center of Pittsburgh.
His creative writing services have included literary reviews for publication, arts-related event documentation, essays, prose fiction, comic-book scripts, and poetry. Clients have included the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and The Pittsburgh Foundation.
Marcel has won numerous awards for his work, including: an Advancing Black Art in Pittsburgh Award (The Pittsburgh Foundation and The Heinz Endowments, 2016); an Artists Opportunity Grant (The Greater Pittsburgh Arts Council, 2016); Best Local Cartoonist (Pittsburgh City Paper, 2017); BMe Community Genius Fellowship (BMe, 2018); an inaugural honoree of Righteous Among the Neighbors (The LIGHT Education Initiative and the Holocaust Center of Pittsburgh, 2024); and a Pittsburgh Cultural Treasure designation (The Heinz Endowments and the Ford and POISE Foundations, 2024)
